Crowne Plaza-Orland Downtown
304 West Colonial Drive, Orlando, FL 32801
RegisterThe Upper Cervical Council of the International Chiropractors Association (ICA) will offer this lecture in-person program – Management of Concussion and Post-Concussion Symptoms March 22-23, 2025 with speaker Jonathan Chung, DC.
Course Objective:
Upon successful completion, attendees will be able to understand the pathophysiology of concussion/mild traumatic brain injury. Attendees will be able to triage clinical presentations of acute, sub-acute, and chronic head injury. Attendees will be able to describe and identify different clinical phenotypes of concussion symptoms, and how to examine patients for the different subtypes with focus on autonomic, cervicogenic, and vestibulo/ocular types. Learners will also understand risk factors for prolonged concussion symptoms and strategies to mitigate delayed recovery. Finally, candidates will have an overview of the multidisciplinary management of concussion.
Course Description:
This comprehensive course provides an in-depth exploration of concussions and mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI), emphasizing their epidemiology, social implications, clinical assessment, and evidence-based management strategies. Participants will gain expertise in recognizing and treating various concussion-related phenotypes while exploring cutting-edge therapeutic interventions.
Key topics include:
Epidemiology and Social Impact: Historical perspectives, sociological factors influencing concussion messaging, and common myths about TBI, CTE, and neurodegeneration.
Pathophysiology of Concussion: Detailed analysis of the neurometabolic cascade, acute recovery timelines, and pathways to chronic symptoms, including risks of second-impact syndrome.
Acute Injury Evaluation and Management: Tools for triaging acute head injuries, including SCAT6, Glascow Coma Scale, and identifying critical symptoms warranting emergent care. Advanced imaging guidelines and acute treatment strategies targeting metabolic dysfunction are also covered.
Sub-acute and Chronic Symptoms: Understanding phenotypes, predictors of delayed recovery, and methods for assessing outcomes in chronic concussion cases.
Specialized Phenotypes: Managing vestibular, oculomotor, autonomic, and cervical dysfunctions post-concussion through targeted therapies and co-management.
Rehabilitation and Neuroplasticity: Applying multi-modal, patient-specific rehabilitation plans based on clinical phenotypes, while leveraging principles of neuroplasticity to optimize recovery.
Additional Considerations: Exploring nutritional, metabolic, and emerging therapies, such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy and photobiomodulation, to enhance patient outcomes.
By the end of this course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and tools to address concussions comprehensively, fostering better outcomes for patients through evidence-based and multidisciplinary care.
